Not your typical vacation

There is something huge about to happen here on the Big Island, and how I wish we were here to see it. I count myself fortunate I'm even here to see all the athletes tapering (slowing down/preparing for race day).

The Hawaiian ironman starts on Oct 8th. All athletes need to be here by the 6th. The resort we are staying at is along the marathon route, and let me tell you, there are buff, muscular people EVERYWHERE. One of the most cool things is to go down to the oceanfront and watch them do their ocean swim.

I was in a running shop this morning (all these active people are giving me a marathon itch), and one of the athletes said "anyone can do it". I think he might be crazy. First I pointed out that you would need to enjoy both biking and swimming. My mom pointed out, you'd have to know how to swim. These people to me are frankly remarkable.

Sitting here typing this, I remember telling people that anyone could run a marathon. And sitting here probably only able to push out a 5k by a miracle, it's hard to believe those words ever came out of my mouth.

Today I'm thinking about:

That my dad said I have done some pretty remarkable things. Past tense.
When Grace wasn't even on the radar yet I started buying baby items and stowing them away. I am tempted to buy a new running shirt here and stow it away. Better yet I should use it.
These athletes are making me dream big. I'm thinking of future marathons I've always wanted to run.

Maybe two kids later, I still have it in me.

I remember the high after my (single) marathon in 2000. The only bigger one was moments after my son's birth in 2006. Between those years, I rarely ran at all, but I did other things - walking, hiking, etc. Now it's nearly 2012. Will it be the year I put my running shoes back on? I certainly hope so. And wish the same for you!!
